Remembering History | Redefining Our Generation
CAI 40 YEARS
CELEBRATION
About Us
Cambodian Association of Illinois (CAI)
This is a special year for us as the Cambodian Association of Illinois (CAI) celebrates its 40 year anniversary. In 1976, a group of volunteers responded to the needs of Cambodian refugees seeking a new home and way of life after escaping persecution and torture. Today, a new generation of leaders are paving the way for Cambodian Americans. What was founded during a time of crisis has become a convergent place for memorializing history and exploring identities.
National Cambodian Heritage Museum and Memorial (NCHMM)
The National Cambodian Heritage Museum and Memorial (NCHMM) was born out of the need to honor loved ones who were lost in the genocide from 1975-1979 and its aftermath, and to establish a community process for healing. As any other community who has suffered genocide will understand, the aftermath lingers amongst the survivors. It is never really over. The impact of the genocide remains to this day. Trauma continues to manifest amongst survivors in the form of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other mental or behavioral issue. Meanwhile, their children seek answers and understanding of a history and culture halfway around the world that is so much a part of their identity.
REMEMBERING HISTORY | REDEFINING OUR GENERATION
This year, CAI and NCHMM are putting together a series of events to capture on the theme of Remembering History, Redefining Our Generation. We remember those who came before us, as we pave way for tomorrow’s future.
We invite you to participate by being in attendance, being a partner, or being a sponsor.
